Welcome to the Shiloh Pentecostal Church Dalston Newsletter Winter Edition in the wonderful name of Jesus. At Shiloh Dalston, our congregation has been worshiping here for over fifty years and our aim is for everyone to have a personal relationship with our Saviour Jesus Christ.

The purpose of this newsletter is to inform you of future events and to review things that have happened, which would enable our church to grow. We intend to have four editions a year; this one is the first Winter Edition. We would appreciate your comments to help us improve.

2019 was quite an eventful year. Sister Lazelle Howes, a stalwart of the Shiloh Fellowship, has now been ordained as a Reverend and we offer her our sincere congratulations and best wishes. We said farewell to Apostle Oswald Mcburnie who has returned to Grenada to continue his Ministry. We also celebrated the birthday of our first centurion Sister Esther Herbert in September and pray that God will continue to bless her.  With deep sorrow, we said goodbye to three of our members: Sister Angela Grant, Sister Mary Emmanuel and Brother George Browne, who were called home and are sadly missed.

The Shiloh Bible Institute is going from strength to strength and the President, Pastor Lewis, has been visionary with his initiation of a fifth year for students who had already graduated and wanted to continue their studies. This has proven to be very popular with a very high intake. The Evangelical service hosted by the second-year students was held a little later than usual but it still surpassed all expectations. The Annual Graduation Service was held on Saturday 7th September, and our warmest congratulations to all the students who has graduated, and we would like to thank the Women’s Ministry for the delicious refreshments served afterwards. We were pleased Pastor Lewis has continued his outreach overseas mission revisiting Zambia where he was received by Bishop Nonde. They have made tremendous progress since his last visit and are grateful for the donations sent by the Shiloh fellowship. Pastor Lewis kindly accepted an invitation to visit Ghana from Brother and Sister Kwasi Oppong. Such was the impact on him, he can’t wait to go back there again and take others with him!

And closer to home, Sister Veronica Fleming and Sister Judy Greenaway were instrumental in organizing the late Summer outreach program at Dalston Square, Hackney, where we were evangelizing to the local community. Brother Victor Williamson, Pastor Martin Vitalis and Brother Ralford Lee were very vocal and inspirational while other members handed out leaflets and gave information.  There was also a food bank led by the Women’s Ministry leader Sister Gloria Descant that was a huge success.

The holy spirit is moving amongst us here in Shiloh Dalston and we look forward to another successful new year.

Foreword from Pastor Francis Lewis

Dearly Beloved

Welcome to the Shiloh Newsletter. A newsletter is like a newspaper; it is a communication with those of the organisation. It is a message that is distributed at regular intervals. A CHURCH NEWSLETTER is very important. It keeps the regular people, the prospects, the absentees, and the people who have moved away informed about the goings on of the church. It keeps them in touch. We certainly hope that our newsletter would meet all these needs.

At Christmas we celebrate Jesus coming to earth as a baby. The birth of a baby is always a time of joy, and this birth was no exception. But this birth had a far greater purpose than any other in history for John declared that “The Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world” (1John 4:14).

We live in a world infected by sin, and because of sin every person who has ever lived is under condemnation to Hell and eternal separation from God. The deepest joy of Christmas, the greatest cause for celebration, is that Jesus came to earth on a rescue mission to provide sinners a way to God. “For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved” (John 3:17).

As we have celebrated the glorious birth of our Saviour, I want to thank God for what He has done for us in 2019.

As we are now in 2020 our continuing mission at Shiloh is to proclaim the Good News that “there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” (Romans 8:1) to those of the community and the world. We continue to believe that Christ can forgive sin, take away guilt, and restore hope.

Grace and Peace be multiplied to you all!

In His service

Pastor Francis Lewis

Brother Joel Harris will repeat the sponsored walk he had completed in 2017 from Chingford Mount to Shiloh Dalston for the Missions Department. He hopes that you will be able to support him again.

Singing Lessons

Minister Josian Flood hopes to resume her singing classes which are normally held before service on Sundays for boys and girls who wants to learn how to sing. Music is one of her greatest pleasures and she will encourage shy children to sing and help them understand the text of the songs being sung with good vocal control through breathing and tone production.  She will also nurture and help the children to find their voices while singing with others. They will learn the strength of a good singing posture, and how to project and be clear about the words of the songs they are singing.

Baptism Classes

At Shiloh we have baptism classes conducted by Pastor Lewis and Minister Woodley which are energetic, dynamic and inspired by the power of the holy spirit culminating with a water baptism, which is a sign of dying to the world and living in Christ, as well as an outward symbol of that which has already been accomplished by the Holy Spirit. So if you would like to know God rather than know about God and to receive salvation, for more details, please see Pastor Lewis or Minister Woodley who would be delighted to guide you in your spiritual walk with the Lord.

light, taking the Gospel to many nations as the LORD will lead and open doors.Over the years and even presently, we have been involved in building programs in Uganda, Zambia, Sierra Leone, Indonesia and India. The Missions Department has helped to fund Medical Missionary groups going to the Caribbean and recently to Nigeria. This has been both encouraging and enabling to the Nationals in these areas to press forward in the work of God. We covet your prayers and financial support as we press forward. Let God's Kingdom come. Let His will be done on earth as it is done in heaven.

May you experience God's rich blessings.

In Christ.

The Health is Wealth Mission to Nigeria 2019

By Mandy Job

Men and Women Ministries

I once joked with one of the organisers of the Health is Wealth Mission - ”when you are going to Nigeria let me know and I will go with you”.  Little did I know that this trip would change my life. I found myself amongst a group of 12 men and women from various churches around the United Kingdom; eager and committed to providing health screening and evangelism not only to people in the UK, but worldwide. Nigeria, an oil producing country which is 4 times larger than the UK, was chosen. We travelled 300km from Lagos to Ayetoro Ekiti where we were based. With funding from ADRA Netherlands and supported by local churches, an extensive programme was planned for three weeks. The programme commenced with the Children’s Health Expo, designed to help the children make better choices in the food they eat and to exercise regularly. Two hundred children volunteered to participate and were all rewarded with a hot meal afterwards. The team combined education and awareness to

ensure the message resonated. An acronym was used NEW START where the team taught the children the importance of a healthy body: N – Nutrition, E – Exercise, W – Water, S – Sunshine, T – Temperance, A – Air, R – Rest, T – Trust. Everything was going well until a young boy entered the classroom and just laid on the ground. I realised that he needed medical attention as he was diagnosed with malaria. 57% of children under 5 years die from malaria. The following Sunday, the local paediatricians provided health checks and medication and around 560 children were seen. On the first day for adults screening, a lady turned up at 6.00 am to be first in line as places available were limited. In a country where you pay for healthcare, this was an opportunity for her and others to be seen for free. During the programme, over 500 adults were seen and the programme ended with nutritional lectures, cookery and sewing classes conducted by Sister Gloria Simon, Sister Melvina Kirwan and Sister Margaret Dawn. Some say it’s just a free holiday, but the work schedule was very hectic. The group initially started when they visited schools and colleges doing health checks and participating in the Vitality Fairs headed by Sister Elsie Staples. It wasn’t all smooth sailing, with the rigorous schedule. The main organisers were Sister Valerie Shitu, Sister Millie Williams and Sister Fola Boyede, who made the programme a huge success.

Time to Reflect

By Brother Victor Williamson

Leave the wilderness behind. Step into God’s promise!

The children of Israel came out of Egypt, but Egypt was still in them. Deuteronomy 1:6 – 7.  An eleven-day journey took them forty years. God spoke to them at Horeb, Deuteronomy 1:8.

Are you stuck in the same position for many years?  Are you enjoying the good life God has for you which He has provided for you?

Mark 4:35 - 41, It's time to cross over. Leave the wind and storms of the past and move forward.  We must take a step of faith into God’s promise for His church.  Things must change for you to move forward. Things will change when you step forward.   Everyone no matter of age must play their part.  Matthew 17:20 speaks of faith as a grain of mustard seed.  We must speak to our problems, circumstances and situations.   And seek forgiveness and healing to remove the hindrances of our lives.  All you need is mustard seed faith.

Answer to my prayers

One day I went to the hospital to visit a Sister who was sick, I got a lift from someone to take me to the hospital, after a while I realize I left my bus pass and money at home. It was a Monday night and I wanted to go to the men’s meeting as usual but I had only £1.00 in my pocket, and the cost of the bus pass was £5.00.I went to a shop nearby that sold bus passes and told the shopkeeper my story, I ask him if he could give me a pass so I could go home and collect my pass and money and come back and pay him, he said no, I said I understand, what  could I do, I was miles from home and in big trouble, after all I am a senior citizen and Dalston was too far for me to walk so I called upon the lord. I prayed to the lord and said, lord you see the situation I am in, the situation is serious please send someone to help me I am in need, I also said you told me to ask, and I am now asking for help within a few minutes a man came along, and I told him the situation he then put his hand in his pocket and gave me more than  I needed, I ask him for his name and address so that I could repay him, he said that was not necessary, I can  see you are an honest man. Hallelujah.

A testimony from Brother William Greene

God will find a way

I want to thank the Lord Jesus Christ for his goodness towards to me.  I have learnt that when you put your trust in Jesus, he will never let you down. The reason I put my trust in him is because he is faithful and over the years, he has proved himself to me in so many wonderful ways.  He hears and answers prayer when you pray to him in earnest.

Some years ago, a new manager joined the company where I was working, and she made life very difficult for me.  She was unfairly critical of my work, questioned everything I did, and when I made good suggestions, she put them in place and claimed them as her own. I prayed to my Father in heaven to deliver me from her unreasonable behaviour which was stressing me out. I thought God is not hearing my prayers because things were getting worse and I was at my wits end.

Then one weekend, the Lord gave me a word from Exodus chapter 14 verses 13-14 “the Egyptians who you have seen today, ye shall see them again no more for ever. The Lord shall fight for you, and you shall hold your peace”.   When I went to work after the weekend, a member of my team said to me “You’re never goanna guess what has happened. The manager has resigned, and she will be leaving by the end of the week! “

So be encouraged my brother be encouraged my sister, whatever you are going through Jesus hears your prayers and he will deliver you in due season.  “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.” Proverbs 3 verse 5

Youth Services

To All

Shiloh Cherubim’s

As you know, the youth and the young children are the next generation. They are the lifeblood of our church as they are needed desperately more than ever, especially with all the things that are going on in society today, and with what they are being taught in school, they need to be protected, and what safer haven is there? At Shiloh Dalston, we have a fantastic youth program in which they can all participate; we know that the youngsters don’t want to attend church these days, so please let us encourage them to come thank you. Proverbs 22 verse 6 - “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it’’.

Shiloh Women’s Network:

 Balancing our Hormones

By Sister Judy Greenaway

Under the Auspice of the Women’s Ministry

To understand how our diet plays an important role in our wellbeing, we had a nutritional coach, Connie, in to help us comprehend how diet and environmental influences can cause hormonal imbalances. The workshop was amazing as we learnt about Endocrine disruptors, which are chemicals that can interfere with our hormones by mimicking them in the body causes over stimulation. It really was an eye-opener.  All the systems in our bodies that are controlled by hormones can be affected. We were educated on how to prevent everyday items from disrupting our hormones. For example, household cleaning products, the food we eat, even the pots we cook in and the containers we store our food in. All these disruptors can cause cancerous tumours, birth defects and other developmental disorders. By making small changes and excluding certain items from our diet and environment, will help to balance our hormones. Connie also encouraged us to eat more organic foods to keep down the level of pesticides in our body. She strongly recommended juicing and intermittent fasting if we want to see a radical change. Healing can come if we make small adjustments. Let food be thy medicine!

In 2020, the Shiloh Woman's Network will continue the series on wellbeing and will host a seminar on the benefits of healthy eating to improve our hormones, hair and skin. Please look out for further details and be encouraged to attend.

The Mentor

Sister Veronica Fleming has actively hosted several projects for the children and young people at Shiloh Dalston and have done an excellent job supporting the children with the back-to-school prayer and gift session. The children and their parents have shown their gratitude for this meaningful support she has given them.  Her aim is to engage the community especially to those on low incomes and single parents. There have been half-term events where she has invited the Metropolitan Police and others to speak to the youths about gang violence and youth crime. She is also a teacher of a Sunday school class at Shiloh Dalston and she is held in very high esteem by the congregation. She does not take any credit as she says it is not about her, but to God be the glory great things he has done, and will keep on doing.
